Fire at Les Anemones, Retirement Home in France Kills Six People - 14th Dec 2011

Six people have been killed after a fire broke out in an old people's home in the southern French city of Marseille.

All six victims were believed to be women. They died of smoke inhalation after the fire raged through the third floor of the building, police said.

Some 80 firefighters tackled the blaze and removed the victims from the building, according to local government officials.

Emergency teams treated 15 people for smoke inhalation. Three of them are now in a serious condition.

A total of 180 people were in the nursing home when the fire broke out but not all of them were evacuated.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known and an investigation is under way.

The fire comes less than a month after two people died in a fire in a retirement home at La Rochefoucauld in the Charente region of southwest France. Read More
