Chinese waterway turns scarlet after illegal factories dump dye stocks - 15th Dec 2011

It looks as if they End Of Days has come to northern China.

But in fact the real cause of this river turning such a gruesome red was dye being dumped into the storm drain network of the city it runs through.

This picture taken on Tuesday shows the red polluted Jian River in the city of Luoyang, in north China's Henan province.

The Luoyang Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau said the dye had been dumped by two illegal dye workshops.

Officials raided the factories to shut them down, and are now working to disassemble their machinery. Read More
