Saif Al-Islam Arrested In Southern Libya - 19th Nov 2011

Saif Al-Islam, son of Colonoel Gaddafi, has been arrested in southern Libya, the country's justice minister says.

Saif, 39, once heir apparent to succeed his father, vanished into the desert on Oct 19 as forces loyal to him crumbled.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had been captured or given himself up, but Libyans said he had been detained near Obari in the Sahara, in the south.

Libyan sources told Reuters news agency that Saif al-Islam and several bodyguards, but no other senior figures from the ousted administration, had been taken near the town of Obari. They said fighters from the western mountain town of Zintan had detained him. He was in good health, the justice minister added. Reports a few weeks ago had speculated that he had been injured in a Nato airstrike, possibly losing his hands.

Following the killing of his father and his brother Mutassim Gaddafi by rebels soon after their capture, the International Criminal Court said it had been in communication with him and had discussed his surrender through intermediaries. Read More
