Green envoy Zac Goldsmith 'sacked' for defying government over EU vote - 20th Nov 2011

David Cameron was accused of ‘petty and vindictive behaviour’ last night after millionaire Tory MP Zac Goldsmith was banned from a key Government job for defying him over the EU.

The Prime Minister had approved the appointment of Mr Goldsmith as his personal Downing Street envoy to fight global warming and save the world’s rainforests.

But the offer was withdrawn two days before his first assignment – and hours after he voted in favour of a referendum on whether Britain should cut its ties with Brussels.

Mr Goldsmith was due to start work as Mr Cameron’s ‘climate change and forest envoy’ last month.

His first task, a meeting in London last month with President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon, where forests are at risk, was publicly announced.

But Mr Goldsmith was barred from attending and told his job offer was cancelled. Two days earlier, he was among 81 Tory MPs who voted in favour of a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU, ignoring Mr Cameron’s order to toe the line. Read More
