Nasa Gives Glimpse Into Heart Of Milky Way - 12th Oct 2011

The most detailed image of the Milky Way has been captured by Nasa scientists.

A new image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope reveals swirls of super-hot gas and previously undiscovered stars at the centre of our galaxy.

To the bottom right of the image there is a bright spiral of ionized gas surrounding the massive black hole that lies at the galactic core, 27,000 light years from Earth.

Nasa used infrared instruments to cut through the gas and dust clouds that would normally obscure the view.

The panorama covers around 35,000 square light years of space.

The ghostly shapes of hydrogen gas clouds are created by the strong magnetic fields from massive stars. Source
