Great White Sharks spotted off Rottnest Island, Perth coast forcing Beaches to close - 31st Oct 2011

Two five metre great white sharks have been spotted off the coast of Rottnest Island, 20 kilometres from Perth.

Craig Bowley from Surf Life Saving Western Australia says the sharks were spotted 200 metres off Rottnest Island, south of Battery Point, at 1:25pm on Monday.

The great white sharks were spotted swimming together.

The Rottnest Island Authority has closed beaches at Green Island and Strickland Bay.

Surf Lifesaving WA says a helicopter is tracking the sharks as they move west and towards the jetty on the island.

The sightings come after an unprecedented spate of fatal shark attacks in Western Australia's southern waters.

The most recent was a week ago when American man George Thomas Wainwright was killed by a shark while diving off Rottnest.

He was scuba diving on the other side of the island at Little Armstrong Bay when he was attacked.

Earlier this month businessman Bryn Martin was another victim of a shark attack after he disappeared while swimming at Cottesloe Beach.

And 21-year-old Kyle Burden was killed by a shark in September while body-boarding at Bunker Bay in the state's South West. Source
