Anthony Arick Swamy Joseph: Court awards gallows to paedophile serial killer

Even as the citizens are yet to come out of trauma of eight-year-old Kush Kataria's brutal murder and demanding death for Ayush Pugalia, the Nagpur bench of Bombay high court on Tuesday seemed to have listened to their earlier prayers of awarding gallows to a similar killer who crossed all limits of humanity to butcher a 10-year-old boy in 2008.

A division bench comprising justices PV Hardas and SB Deshmukh confirmed the Nagpur sessions court verdict of awarding capital punishment to paedophile serial killer - Anil alias Anthony Arick Swamy Joseph (35) - terming it "rarest of rare". Earlier on November 29 last year, the sessions court headed by former principal district and sessions judge Sunil Shukre had found him guilty of mercilessly killing Lakhan Vaidya after sodomizing him. He then disposed of his body in a nearby well in the area known as 'Juna Kabrastan' in Sadar on midnight of January 12, 2008. Assistant government pleader Sanjay Doifode pleaded the case for the Sadar police while additional public prosecutor Jyoti Vajani had argued the case in the sessions court.

Joseph had been a serial offender in the sex-related crimes in the past but escaped sentence as prosecution miserably failed to establish strong evidence. An offence of rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl was registered against him in 1995 where he had disposed of her body in the same well where Lakhan's body was found. He is also accused of attacking a young boy on head and leaving him seriously injured in 1993. The serial offender faces three murder charges including that of Lakhan. Additionally, he has many offences registered against him at different police stations. more
