Salmonella scare as Cargill recalls ground turkey from same plant twice in six weeks - 12th Sept 2011

Cargill has made a second ground turkey recall after a test showed salmonella in a sample from the same plant tied to a recall last month.

The second recall is much smaller than the one the company issued for 36 million lbs of ground turkey from the Arkansas plant.

That recall followed a salmonella outbreak that federal health officials said had sickened 107 people in 31 states - killing one person.

No illnesses have been tied to the second recall - made after a sample from the plant in Springdale, Arkansas, tested positive for salmonella.

Cargill halted production of ground turkey products at the plant on August 2 in anticipation of a recall announced the next day.

Equipment was taken apart and steam-cleaned.

Limited production resumed on August 10 after the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved more anti-bacterial safety measures. Read More
