'heavenly palace' First Look at China's Experimental Craft - 27th Sept 2011

These are the first images of the experimental craft that China hopes will pave the way for its own space station when it is launched this week.

The Tiangong 1, or 'Heavenly Palace', will blast off from a site in the Gobi Desert later this week, the Xinhua news agency reported.

It will be the latest show of the nation's growing prowess in space, and comes while budget restraints and shifting priorities have held back U.S. manned space launches.

The small unmanned space lab's biggest test will come several weeks into the mission when it attempts to dock with another Shenzhou 8 spacecraft.

Should it be successful it paves the way for a potential Chinese space station, although Beijing is still several years away from catching up with space superpower. Read More
