Girl, 8, dies from rare disease after being bitten by a mosquito - 6th Sept 2011

An eight-year-old girl has died after she contracted a rare disease caused by a mosquito bite, doctors believe.

The director of Groce Funeral Home in Hendersonville, North Carolina, said he is working with the family of the girl from Henderson County, who died last Wednesday.

He said health officials are still trying to work out if her death was caused by a rare, mosquito-borne disease called La Crosse encephalitis.

Family medicine physician Dr Chelsea Burgin confirmed that people can get La Crosse encephalitis from mosquitoes.

But she added that the risk for people getting the disease is low.

Of those cases, only one per cent is fatal, but children often experience more severe cases, Fox News reports. Read More
