Father Held After Suspected Intruder Dies, Bramhall, Greater Manchester - 18th Sept 2011

A 39-year-old man has been arrested after a suspected burglar was stabbed and died at a house in Bramhall, according to Greater Manchester Police.

Officers were called to Midland Road, Bramhall, following reports intruders had forced their way into a home, shortly after 7.50pm on Saturday.

A man, thought to be in his late 30s, was found with knife injuries, a police statement said.

He was given first aid by paramedics and officers but died a short time afterwards.

It is believed two men had entered the house and threatened the occupant, a 39-year-old man, the statement said.

The man was home alone at the time but his wife and son returned during the burglary and were able to escape unharmed.

A second offender fled the seen and it is believed he may have driven off in a white Citroen van, registration MM02 XEY, that was parked nearby on Chinley Close.

Detectives are urgently trying to trace this vehicle.

A 39-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and was being questioned by officers.

Chief Superintendent Tim Forber said: "Clearly this is a serious incident in which a man has lost his life and at this time we believe the dead man was one of two men who were attempting to carry out a burglary at the house.

"We have a team of detectives carrying out a thorough investigation and we will use all the resources available to us to establish the full facts of what has happened."

The officer appealed for information about those involved in the burglary and the whereabouts of the van.
