Dale Farm Residents Win Temporary Injunction - 19th Sept 2011

Residents of the UK's biggest illegal travellers' camp have won a temporary injunction against the council.

Basildon Council have been prevented from clearing any structures at the site ahead of a High Court hearing on Friday.

Scores of people at Dale Farm in Basildon, Essex, were due to be evicted after losing a decade-long legal fight over the unauthorised development.

Mr Justice Edwards-Stuart, who granted the order, said there was concern that the action "may go further" than the terms of the enforcement notices:

"Having regard to the fact there is no fixed date for starting these - but they are imminent - I do not see that any serious injustice will be caused if the actual implementation of any measures will not take place before the end of this week."

Around 20 bailiffs had arrived at the site to begin ejecting residents and their many supporters from one half of the six-acre site, a former scrapyard.

The news was greeted by cheers inside the camp.
