Anni Dewani's Killer 'will never stand trial because of his brain tumour' - 13th Sept 2011

The man accused of firing the shot that killed honeymooning bride Anni Dewani will never stand trial for her murder, it was claimed yesterday.

Alleged hitman Xolile Mngeni, who has undergone surgery for a malignant brain tumour, will be declared unfit to stand trial for her murder, it was reported.

South Africa's The New Age newspaper quoted a source close to the medical team taking care of Mngeni saying the alleged gangster is 'unfit to stand trial'.

'The way things stand now with all the chemotherapy Mngeni is having, he won't be able to stand trial', the source allegedly said.

Mngeni is due to appear in court next week in connection with the hijack and murder of 28-year-old Anni in November last year.

However, if he remains too unwell to do so prosecutors will provisionally withdraw the charges of murder and kidnapping he faces, the paper reports.

If the charges are withdrawn, the 23-year-old would then immediately be freed from prison. Read More
