Andrew Fountain sees son and his half-brother drown in freezing lake after trying to rescue injured geese - 12th Sept 2011

A man was forced to watch helplessly as his son and his half-brother drowned at a remote lake after attempting to help three injured geese.

Andrew Fountain, 56, was on the bank of Lake Mere at the Kingfishers Bridge Project near Wicken Fen in Cambridgeshire when he saw his son Luke, 17 and his half-brother Ashley, 22, slip under the freezing water.

The brothers. from Stretham, Cambridgeshire, had been in a wooden rowing boat when they saw a flock of geese in distress.

Luke, a trainee gamekeeper, tried to lean over the side of the boat to help the birdS but fell into the water.

His brother dived in to help him, but they were both caught in mud and reeds and drowned, the Daily Mirror said.

Emergency services and police divers spent yesterday combing the area with both boys fathers, but only one body had been recovered last night. Read More
