Two UK Women Stabbed To Death In Turkey - 19th Aug 2011

Two women from Northern Ireland were stabbed to death in Turkey last night.

The women, described as being middle aged and from County Down, have not been named.

A 17-year-old Turkish man has been arrested over their deaths.

He is understood to be the boyfriend of the daughter of one of the two women.

The incident happened in the city of Izmir, which the two women were visiting at the time. It is believed one of them owns a property in the Kusadasi resort, about 75 miles away.

Both were travelling on Irish passports.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin confirmed consular staff were trying to track down family members.

He said: "We are providing consular assistance through the embassy in Ankara."

South Down MP Margaret Ritchie said she was shocked by the deaths and offered her sympathy to the bereaved families.

"My thoughts are with those involved in this terrible incident," she said.

"And also with their families, who never got the chance to say goodbye to their loved ones.

"I think all the people of South Down will be saddened by this news."
