Trio arrested after trying to 'sneak fake bomb onto plane in dry run test of security' at U.S. airport - 11th Aug 2011

Police have arrested three African refugees after finding a what looked like a home-made bomb in the carry-on luggage of a female suspect.

Security agents at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix stopped the woman boarding a flight to Iowa after finding a mobile phone taped to a jar containing an organic substance.

The package turned out to be fake but investigators say they are taking the incident very seriously and, given the close proximity to the ten-year anniversary of 9/11, have suspicions the attempt may have been a test of airport security.

All three suspects are refugees from Eritrea and were taken into custody after the incident on Friday.

Luwiza Daman, the woman who tried to board the plane, and Shullu Gorado, a man who gave the device, have been released after prosecutors asked for more evidence from police.

They have been handed over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The third person, Shani Asa, is still behind bars waiting for his next court appearance. Read More
