Take unpaid holiday and a wage cut or lose your job, council tells workers - 25th Aug 2011

Council workers could be forced to take a week's unpaid leave as bosses try to save tens of millions of pounds.

If plans being put forward by leaders at Rochdale council in Greater Manchester go ahead, they will also be paid less money and miss out on three days of sickness benefit.

Employees are being told to back the changes or face the prospect of hundreds of job cuts.

Changes to pay and terms and conditions have been proposed as the town hall looks to cut another £64m from its budget by 2015, after slashing the same amount this year.

The pay cut would affect the authority's 7,000 non-school staff. Some would have their wages slashed by 2.5 per cent, with managers taking a five per cent cut.

Staff will have the final say on changes in a ballot to be held this autumn.

But council chiefs are urging employees to back the plans - or face possible job losses.
