Residents evacuate as Nevada blaze threatens homes - 17th Aug 2011

Residents voluntarily evacuated as a wildfire sent plumes of smoke shooting into the air and forced the closure of a highway in Nevada.

The blaze near Gardnerville that began Tuesday afternoon burned at least one structure, said Capt Terry Taylor of Douglas County's Nevada Fire Department.

It was unclear whether it was a home.

Residents nearby have packed up their belongings, including animals and keepsakes, and left the area.

About 40 homes scattered in the area are threatened, Taylor said.

Authorities closed U.S. Highway 395 between Gardnerville and Topaz Lake.

The Ray May Way fire is "man caused," Taylor said, but declined to call it arson. Source
