Northern England hit by flooding as parts of Britain are hit with heavy rain - 6th Aug 2011

Emergency services were tonight dealing with a large number of weather-related incidents after heavy rain caused flooding in the north east of England and Northern Ireland, while Scotland is also on flood alert.

Durham and parts of Northumberland were the worst hit areas.

Durham Police set uLinkp an incident room to deal with calls from the public and urged people not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said they had received between 60 and 100 calls relating to the weather.

He added: 'It has been busy. When the deluge came it overwhelmed the drains and sewers and caused some roads and a few homes to flood.

'We have occasionally had to pump out some water. There has been no rescues and no evacuations.' Read More
