Anthrax spreads in Rajshahi, Bangladesh - 21st Aug 2011

Anthrax infection has spread in Khirshintikar of Horhgram union of Poba Upazila.

Upazila executive officer (UNO) Abu Salim Mahmud Ul Hasan said about 16 people have been infected since Saturday.

Speaking with the infected people, the UNO told that the villagers had bought a cow from a local market, City Haat, and ate its meat.

"Those who were involved in slaughtering the cow and who ate its meat were slowly infected. But they did not know it at the beginning. After taking treatment from upazila health centre and Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, they are about to cure now," said the UNO.

Some among the infected are 'Anowara', 35, 'Nazrul', 40, 'Murad', 24, 'Ruma', 25, 'Mostakin', 40, 'Asad', 30, 'Jamela', 60, 'Ahammed', 35, 'Aduri', 25, 'Ataur', 35, Masud Rana, 30, Sadek Ali, 40 and Marzina Khatun, 55.

The UNO also said he had visited the village on information. All the infected people are being treated at the upazila health centre free of cost, he added.

District civil surgeon Shahidul Islam said, "All necessary steps have been taken for the treatment of the infected people."

Upazila animal resource officer Shafiqul Alam said, "Domestic animals of Khirshintikar village are vaccinating from Sunday. We are also monitoring the situation." Source
