Train Derailment Forces Evacuations Near Palmdale amid Fears of possible chlorine leak - 27th July 2011

Little Rock - A freight train derailed in the Littlerock area near Palmdale today, and while nobody was injured, the wreck raised concerns about a possible chlorine leak from one or more of the overturned railcars.

Inspector Matt Levesque of the county fire department said the derailment was reported at about 1:25 p.m. near 92nd Street East and East Avenue T. The Union Pacific train included about 70 cars, and 22 of them were either off the tracks or overturned.

Levesque said authorities were "initiating evacuations."

"It is pretty sparsely populated up there, probably it is affecting only homes directly next to the train. The evacuations are just a precaution," he said.

Levesque said it could take hours to determine if there actually are any chlorine leaks, given the number of cars in the train and the need to inspect each individually.

The cause of the derailment was not immediately known, although the train did not strike any vehicles. Read More
