Shark attacks six-year-old girl in 18 inches of water as horrified parents look on - 21st July 2011

A six-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after being attacked by a shark in 18 inches of water off the coast of North Carolina.

The unidentified girl was playing on a bodyboard in shallow water on Ocracoke Island when the shark attacked. Her mother and father were less than 10 feet away.

Hyde County officials said the girl was bitten on her lower right leg and foot. She was flown to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Initially the hospital said she was stable but later said her condition had become critical.

A statement from the parents issued by the hospital said the girl was in good spirits, saying: 'I hate sharks. I like dolphins way better.'

Hyde County spokeswoman Jamie Tunnell said bystanders described the shark as having a 'black tip or black fin, which is the type of sharks that have been known to be in this area'.

No other swimmers were injured and area beaches remained open.

Ocracoke Island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and is renowned for its beaches. Read More
