Is a new angel of death stalking the wards? Third patient dies as drips are tampered with - 15th July 2011

Police are stepping up security measures at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, Greater Manchester where three patients have died after medication was tampered with.

An 84-year-old man died yesterday. His death follows that of two terminally ill patients, a 44-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis and a 71-year-old man, earlier in the week.

It has raised fears today of a new 'angel of death' among medical staff after police revealed someone had deliberately contaminated saline in the hospital with insulin.

Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney said: 'It is an extremely fast-paced investigation and we are working closely with the hospital and the coroner. Greater Manchester Police's priority is to prevent any further harm to patients.

'As part of that we are advising the hospital in terms of increased security measures .

'We have recovered a number of ampoules of solution and are working closely with the hospital to try and get to the bottom of what has happened.' Read More
