David Perry the Boyfriend is named prime suspect in disappearance of police cadet 'Kelly Rothwell' presumed dead - 15th June 2011

Authorities have named a missing police cadet's boyfriend as the prime suspect in her disappearance.

David Perry, 47, has long been a 'person of interest' in the investigation, which began when Kelly Rothwell went missing from her Florida home in March.

The 35-year-old, whom police now presume is dead, disappeared the night she tried to break up with Perry, a former New York state prison guard, and move out of their Indian Rocks Beach apartment, authorities said.

Perry went to Elmira, New York, that same night, they added. He has repeatedly ignored detectives' requests for interviews and his family have refused to talk about the couple unless they have a lawyer present.

No criminal charges have yet been filed against Perry, who is also understood to have started a relationship with another woman shortly after Miss Rothwell disappeared.

Family and friends of Miss Rothwell are now trying to come to terms with the fact she may be dead.

She was last seen on March 12 when she told a close friend over lunch that she was going to break up with Perry.

Her friend Donna Scharrett said that Miss Rothwell was becoming increasingly disturbed at her boyfriend's possessive behaviour and wanted to move out of their beach side condo and be closer to her family.

Ms Scharrett, who met Rothwell at a beach meditation group, said: 'She was excited and positive but at the same time, serene. She was telling me how she was looking forward to the change in her life. Leaving Dave and graduating from the police academy.'

Perry has refused to take a DNA test or even talk to authorities beyond having his lawyer give them a loose, three-hour timeline of the night Miss Rothwell disappeared. Read More
