Yarelis Carrillo, 20, a Pregnant mother of one fighting for her life after being shot in gang crossfire - 31st May 2011

A pregnant mother of one is fighting for her life after being shot in the chest, according to authorities.

Police believe Yarelis Carrillo, 20, from Lawrence, Massachusetts, who is two-months pregnant with her second child, was caught up in gang crossfire after a fight broke out near to where she was standing.

She was hit by a single bullet at 1.30am on Saturday just above her heart, and stopped breathing before being rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Ms Carillo's emotional mother Elizabeth Mercada, who has been keeping vigil at her daughter's bedside, told Fox News: 'My daughter, she's my life.

'If I would have been there I would have covered her with my whole body and let that bullet go through me, not her.

'I have all the church people praying for her. I got people from Puerto Rico, Florida, everywhere praying for her,' she added.

Lawrence Police chief, John Romero, believes Ms Carrillo, who also has a one-year-old daughter, was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Read More
