Officer Philip Chlanda, 29, left his Tribeca station house at 3 am this morning and drove in a squad car to his parent's East 37th Street and Lexington Avenue apartment, which he shared with the girlfriend.
The pair rowed inside the house before moving outside, where Mr Chlanda told his girlfriend 'I love you' before turning the Glock 9 mm on himself. He later died in Bellevue hospital.
Speaking to the New York Daily News, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Mr Chlanda checked his girlfriend's Facebook page to see if she was seeing anyone else.
He said: 'He was left with the impression that she might leave him.
'Nobody saw this coming.'
He added the death was, 'a sad, tragic incident,' and that previously Chlanda had an 'unblemished' four year record with the NYPD.
According to friends the couple planned to get their own apartment soon and move out of the place they shared with his parents. Read More
